New Zealand 1930 Hastings – Gisborne pilot signed cover. (Air Mails of New Zealand p25).
Cover cancelled Gisborne NZ DE 23 11AM 1930 bearing special adhesive Six Pence stamp and endorsement on reverse ‘Guarantee – this is one of two letterd which were posted per Dominion Airways Ltd plane on Dec 22nd 1930. G B Bolt pilot. First flight signed A. Rosenberg.
Dominion Airlines Limited commenced operations on 22 December 1930 when they inaugurated a regular weekday service between Hastings and Gisborne. Flt Lt G B Bolt flew a Desoutter monoplane from Hastings to Gisborne arriving at 1830. The mail was small comprising of two letters both bore the special Six Pence stamps and several copies of the Hawke’s Bay Tribune.
The stamps printed in sheets of six and perforated were used on both the outward and return flights until 29 December on which day a Gisborne – Hastings special adhesive was introduced albeit for one day only. On 29 December the Post Office gave instructions that the special stamps were to be discontinued forthwith.
