1939 Guinea Airways Darwin – Adelaide crash cover with Type F label. (Eustis 843).

18 January 1939 Darwin to Adelaide Guinea Airways Lockheed 14 Karanga crashed into Katherine River, NT. Explanatory labels used at Perth. Cancelled London 6 JAN 1939.

The first two bags of salvaged mail were carried from Adelaide by the DC2 VH-USY Bungana on 22 January and were at Perth GPO by the 23rd. Three further bags had arrived at the Perth GPO by the 25th, the five bags consisting of 142lbs (when dry) or about 5500 items of mail.

Although not badly watered damaged as some mail for South Australia and Victoria, postal officials were kept busy processing over 5000 letters. Virtually all had been delivered by 27 January.
